Whanganui River Trip February 2019. David, Aaron, Felicity and Rob paddled the Whanganui river from Whakahoro to Pipiriki on a four-day guided tour. The weather was hot but frequent swims kept us cool. We camped three nights at small riverside campgrounds. The trip, run by Canoe Safaris, included boats, lifejackets, tents and food. Our young experienced guide, Canon, showed us the best paddling techniques and the safest way to negotiate the many small rapids, as well as him cooking all the meals and carrying much of the gear up from the river to the campsites, which were necessarily perched above the high-water level. We paddled through the setting of the 2005 movie “River Queen” and side trips took us up to an abandoned farmstead above the riverbank and to the historic “Bridge to Nowhere” built in 1936 and abandoned soon after. On the last day we took on the rapid known as the 50:50 (the chance of making it through the right way up) and with a proud Thumbs-Up proved the statistics wrong while witnessing others not so lucky!
